Topaz~Protector from Poison & Bestower of Invisibility

Variety of Topaz Gemstones

Variety of Topaz Gemstones

Most people associate Topaz with the months of November and December being that Golden Topaz is the birthstone for November and Blue Topaz is the birthstone for December.  In fact, when I decided to do my next post on crystals, I asked my mom what she would like to know more about, she replied “how about smokey Topaz?”.  Well, sorry mom, there is no smokey Topaz but what I did find out is that I need to buy more Topaz.  This stone is a wonderful multi-purpose stone that ranges in color from golden yellow, brown, blue, clear, green, and the very rare pink or red.  It is found in the United States, Mexico, Brazil, Myanmar, Russia, India, Australia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan.  Some believe that Topaz is Sanskrit for Fire while others believe Topaz was derived from the Greek word Topazios or Topazion. ( You know which one I believe, right?) :-)   Originally, Topaz was a term used to describe what we know as Peridot and Olivine.

The Ancient Egyptians believed Topaz to be sacred to the Sun God Deity, Ra and the Romans believed it to be sacred to their Sun Deity, Jupiter.  The Ancient Greeks, on the other hand, were much more creative with their beliefs.   The Greeks thought that Topaz had the power to bestow great strength and make the wearer invisible.  (don’t try it, I did and they still saw me at work.) :-(   This stone is also mentioned in the old testament as a symbol or royalty and one of the in the “Breastplate of Judgement” of Aaron was Topaz.  During Medieval times, the royalty and nobility thought it to have magical and mystical powers.  They believed that Topaz protected them from the effects of magic, improved  your eyesight, cure insomnia, cool boiling water, and protect the wearer from poisoning.  Legend has it that Topaz changes color in the presence of poison.  (Handy tool to have during that time)

Rough Cut Red Topaz

During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the red and pink Topaz were used for Russian Czarina’s crowns and jewelry.  No one else was allowed to use the red and pink stones.  It is even thought to bestow upon the lucky wearer, good looks, long life, and intelligence.  It is also the state gemstone for Texas and Utah.  Topaz directs energy where it is needed most in the body.  It is known to soothe and heal what ails you, stimulates, recharges, and re-motivates you to carry on with your tasks, and aligns the meridians of the body.   Topaz seems to be the “motivational” stone since it promotes truth and forgiveness, breaks through doubt and uncertainty, brings about joy, generosity, abundance, and good health.

I guess this is the “life coach” stone as well since it does not allow negativity to stick around, supports openess, honesty, self-realization, self-control, and urges you to develop inner wistom.   Topaz even acts as the peacemaker and has the capacity to see both the big picture and the minute detail of a situation and brings them together in peaceful co-existence.  I know, it’s amazing, lets just all it~ The “motivating, peacemaking, and life coaching” Topaz. :)

Imperial Topaz

Imperial Topaz

Metaphysically, the energy of Topaz is protective, is associated with the Sun and the element of fire.  Topaz prefers to be set in gold and has the power of protection, healing, weight loss, money, and love.  It can protect against envy, disease, injury, sudden onset of craziness, sorcery, and negative magic.  This stone cleanses the aura and induces relaxation and release of tension.  Topaz aids in digestion, restores sense of taste, stimulates metabolism, and fortifies your nerves.  It is especially effective in clearing your base, solar plexus, and brown Chakras as well as stimulating the Kundalini energy to rise.  Topaz helps you pursue a true path, clears your head, improves your concentration, and opens you to higher wisdom.  When worn as jewelry, it will supposedly relieve depression, anger, fear, and greed.   Place this gorgeous gem in your home and it is a charm against fire, accidents, and is believed to bring wealth and money into your life.  Topaz can also help relieve with 21st century stress….I just have to ask what 21st century stress is…..since we don’t have to defend a castle, hunt large predators for food, or be afraid that our boss will literally beat us into submission…….maybe it centers us to respond to all of those texts we get and must respond to while driving.  (I’m just saying…)  Since there are so many colors of Topaz and they symbolize and take care of different things, I thought I would take them one color at a time.

Cut & Faceted Blue Topaz

Cut & Faceted Blue Topaz

Blue Topaz  is an excellent meditation color and aid in attaining higher self awareness.  It is considered the writer’s stone, removes arrogance, and obsessive passions.  It is especially connected to the astrological sign, Virgo and the archangel, Gabriel.  Blue Topaz is know to facilitate eloquent and intelligent speech if placed on your throat chakra.  It supports forgiveness and letting go of obstacles that stop you from moving forward.

Clear Rutilated Topaz was originally thought to be a diamond since it has a lot of the same properties and hardness.  While diamonds can cut glass and pretty much stand up to anything, Clear Topaz will shatter with a direct blow to the stone.  This particular Topaz removes stuck or stagnant energy, purifies emotions and actions, and activates your cosmic awareness.  This kind of Topaz is very rare and is associated with Gemini, Scorpio, and Sagittarius.  If you place on your third eye, it embraces honest, forgiveness, supports problem solving, and guards against interference from the mixing of spirit and physical worlds.

Clear Topaz

Gold or Imperial Topaz is like a giant battery that recharges you spiritually and physically.  It also attracts helpful people to you, regenerates your cellular structure, and is beneficial when your body does not absorb nutrients efficiently.  (Woohoo, the miracle cure, I don’t need to save for plastic surgery anymore)  :-)   Gold Topaz is supposed to treat liver, gallbladder, and endocrine system problems.  This spiffy, little stone attracts wealth, well-being, love, and in its spare time, opens your Crown Chakra to heavenly exchange.  It is linked to the archangel, Michael and the zodiac signs, Leo, Sagittarius, and Pisces.   Yes, this is another stone I will have to glue to my entire body and as usual, if you do it, I am NOT responsible for any vehicle accidents.

Pink Topaz

Pink Topaz is the stone of hope and dissolves resistance.  It is associated with the archangel, Jophiel and the zodiac sign, Libra as well as the planet, Venus.  Use this stone for forgiveness, hope or to manifest health.

Overall, Topaz is a master stone with heightened vibrations that can activate other stones.  Not only is it gorgeous to look at and has some amazing metaphysical properties, it is a great historical story.  Well, there you have it, my next post will be about Peridot, which I have been promising my sister~until then, treat your crystals gently.
