Bark At The Moonstone

Polished Moonstone

Moonstone….sounds mysterious doesn’t it.  Is it really a stone from the moon?  Unfortunately, the moonstone is found here on Earth in a variety of places such as Australia, Brazil, Madagascar, Tanzania, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and the United States.  It is a beautiful white, cream or yellow base with various iridescence’s seen in the stone such as colorless, blue, gold, peach, green, pink or gray.  I like to call it the woman stone because it is specifically geared toward feminine energy, although it can help that man of yours get in touch with his softer, feminine,  more sensitive side.  This stone belongs to the mineral family of feldspar and is considered the most valuable.  It is a very soft stone and can be easily scratched, so if you are looking at it for jewelry, be aware that it can be damaged by just about anything.

The lore behind the Moonstone is interesting and varied.  It has a receptive energy and is associated with the water elements and the zodiac sign of Cancer as well as Pisces, Scorpio, and Libra.  It is connected astrologically with the moon.  You had to know that one was coming. :-)   The Moonstone is best combined with quartz and silver when used for metaphysical purposes.  It is the stone of new beginnings and is intimately linked to the goddesses Diana/Artemis, Selene, and Hecate as well as all lunar goddesses, regardless of their nationality. (Here is my shameless Greek Heritage reference)  It is the stone used in traditional Wiccan ritual jewelry, usually set in silver.  The Romans used the Moonstone in jewelry because they believed the stone was formed from the light of the moon.  According to the legends, moonstone will ensure abundant crops and bring good fortune to the wearer.  It also is related to the Archangel, Haniel who heals female problems and whose aura matches that of the Moonstone.  Funnily enough, some of the ancient lore states that you could see the future if the stone was held in the mouth during a full moon.  I am NOT legally responsible if anyone tries this at home, we all know rocks do not go in our mouths. :-)

Moonstone is traditionally considered the strongest during the lunar phases but is still an excellent stone to have in your collection.  Depending on the experts you consult, the strength varies or not depending on which phase the moon is in.  Some believe if the moon is waxing or on its way to becoming full, this is when the Moonstone is the most powerful, while others believe that it does not matter when the stone is used.  Regardless of when you use the stone, it increases creativity and enhances your intuition.

Various Shapes & Colors of Moonstone

Since the Moonstone is strongly connected to the moon, it brings your unconscious thoughts to the forefront of your mind.  It also helps develop your clairvoyant abilities and when worn as a necklace over the heart, helps you accept and respond to your psychic gifts.  Basically, you could call this an “awareness” stone since most of its properties open up your awareness of hidden talents, loves, capabilities, and issues.  The Moonstone provides good fortune and appreciation for the need of positive change.

Well, as you read this, you may be saying, “I don’t need to change” or “get to the good stuff, like how I can make my mate more sensitive”, I definitely can say that it is a great stone for “womanly” issues, bringing love into your life, and children.  It is also, to a lesser extent, a great stone for balancing of male/female energies as well as some intriguing physical or healing properties.  The biggest gift Moonstone offers is the ability to help balance hormones during the menstrual cycle of a woman as well as gently aiding those who are currently going through the evil period called “menopause”, which is basically going through puberty again but now we have attitudes and possession of a car. :-)

Moonstone soothes emotional instability and stress while providing deep emotional healing.  If placed on your solar plexus chakra, it draws out old emotional patterning to be examined and understood which allows you to dissolve its hold on you.  While we all know, we, women never have emotional meltdowns; it does help calm overreactions to situations with passive female energy.  It balances the male/female energies and is a wonderful antidote to an overly macho male or aggressive female.  Now for my male readers, wait just a minute before you go out and buy every available moonstone for your significant other, it does help men become more in touch with your inner feelings.  You may say, “That’s okay, I can ignore those”, it also makes you more receptive to those sensitive feelings.  So you have now been warned, as they say in the world of capitalism, “Buyer Beware”.

The Moonstone is a stone that is open and receptive and is known to bring love to its wearer.  The calming power of Moonstone is supposed to bring lovers together and help them easily navigate the pitfalls of romance. This stone will not only help find the love of your life, it is noted for its power to bring understanding between partners.  It promotes sensuality and sends out the psychic call for a soul mate.  Having Moonstone in your home amplifies the happy home vibrations and makes it a place of peace and harmony.

Physically, Moonstone strongly affects the female reproductive cycle, eases menstrual cycle symptoms and tension.  It can improve and stabilize fluid imbalances, assimilates nutrients, and removes toxins from a woman’s body.  It is especially helpful with digestive issues caused by stressful situations and is excellent for PMS, conception, pregnancy, childbirth, and breast feeding.  Moonstone is also noted for its ability to improve insomnia by placing under your pillow, stop sleepwalking, and can calm hyperactive kids.  I wonder if this could be the new cure for ADHA/ADD.  Can you picture, hundreds of kids walking around grade school with Moonstones pinned to their clothes? :-)

Moonstone

It is a gently protective stone, associated with the moon following the zodiac cycle, and provides protection for travelers.  This is especially true for travel on the water or even for those that enjoy swimming.  It can also assist with weight loss when the Moonstone is charged and programmed for positive eating habits and will power to stay the course.  Yet another stone, I have to tape all over my body, at this rate, I will not have a spare inch of skin visible and I will cause car accidents by sparkling too much. :-)   Moonstone is also noted for promoting a youthful appearance.

For healing layouts, you can place on your heart, brow, and root chakras in order to balance hormones, emotional stress, as well as blocked energy.  Now, in my research, I noted that some experts recommended that women do not wear this stone during a full moon but could not find the reasoning behind the advice.  Personally, I think that it may amplify emotions more than normal during this time.  It is also tied to gardening; you should either wear the Moonstone while planting your garden or bury a small Moonstone in the garden while visualizing a beautiful and bountiful garden.  Since the Moonstone is so soft and easily scratched, I recommend using Sage to cleanse and charge your stone.  Psychics use Moonstones with their divination tools such as the Tarot and Runes in order to heighten their ability to use their psychic gifts and divination instruments.

I have two Moonstone recipes for resolving an argument between loved one and finding your perfect mate.  These recipes I found in Scott Cunningham’s great book called “Encyclopedia of Crystal, Gem, and Metal Magic”.  The first recipe is used for troubles between mates.  “Hold the Moonstone, empower and program the stone with loving vibrations and give to troubled mate.  This benefits you both if you involve your mate in the ritual and you both exchange Moonstones.”  The other recipe is used to find your one true love or kindred spirit.  “On the night of a full moon, by its light, create a ring of Moonstone Cabochon’s around a pink candle.  Light the candle, and visualize yourself in a loving relationship.”

Keep in mind that with all crystal healing, the crystals can only do so much and it is dependent on you to believe in the power of the crystals and what you are doing.  That being said, always remember to consult a licensed homeopathic healer or physician when deciding to add alternative therapies to your medical regimen.  This does not take the place of a licensed healer or physicians recommendations or advice.  We have barked at the Moonstone this time around, for my next crystals post, I’m thinking that we need to delve into Garnet.  Apparently, it is the “in” stone for the moment in aiding with blocked chakras to geopathic stress.
